Culverhay School Radio (CSR) is a project that has been proposed by and will be run by the students of Culverhay School. The students wish to create a radio station that will give them a voice of their own reflecting issues that are relevant to them, not only in school but in the wider community.
They have prepared a proposal that highlights how they plan to set up the station, when and how they will go on air, the content that the programs will feature and who they will access for support and training. The students have plans for initial teams that at a later date will be able to mentor new members to continue with the project and ensure its growth. The station will involve the whole school, create an identity, and give a voice. The project will benefit the students through social interaction, developing writing, speaking, listening and technical skills. It is intended to extend opportunities to our local primary schools and other youth and community projects in the area enabling them to benefit from the facility.
The project is supported by Kiss 101 FM our Local Radio Station that is
popular with the younger listeners in the area, has supported the project by visits from the DJ’s and presenters from the station. Kiss 101 FM have also offered studio visits to the students to get a feel for the real thing.
Support has also been offered by one of the original founders of the RUH Hospital Radio Station, The school is fully behind the students and their vision for the project and will offer teaching, technical and administration support and advice and facilities.
The project presents an ideal vehicle for the practical application of classroom learning in a ‘real’ situation. It will give relevance to academic subjects and broaden the perception of the benefits of learning to the students.
The project will also provide a ‘hands on’ experience with the opportunity for the students to learn new technical skills, production and media skills, IT skills and music production opportunities.
The project reflects the ethos of the school by enriching and broadening the learning opportunities experienced by the students and strengthening social cohesion between the community and partner primary schools.
The students will recruit in house ‘artists’ through ‘advertising’ throughout the school. An application form will then be sent to all that have expressed an interest in the radio station and will be followed by an interview – this will not exclude any applicant, it is in the first instance to assess interests and strengths of each person.
They are also hoping to engage people (specialists/artists) from outside the school in contributing by providing broadcast material – either through interview, special guest spots or features.
The project will directly benefit young people by creating a space of their own, where they can express opinions, discuss relevant issues, share information,
provide entertainment during recreational periods, create a shared social space (physical and metaphorical), encourage interaction, and have fun while gaining technical skills that will enrich their experience and create an identity,.
The project is beneficial to young people on all levels, even if not participating in the production or development of the project the benefits will extend to all.
The aim is to go ‘live’ in the Autumn term which will give us the opportunity to find additional funding and support in kind to ensure the development of the project.
The students have initially proposed to present programs that include:
Music – Create play lists. Create and record own music. Compose ‘jingles’
Feature concerts and other live music events.
News – In the school and around the community – highlight events and
activities accessible in the area. Special sports and Arts
reports, including critiques.
Special Features - Interviews with sports people, artist and specialists
Plays – Create stories, plays and poetry.
Interaction – Requests, comments and suggestions – Feedback from
listeners. Competitions. Surveys
